植物の三大栄養素は窒素、リン、カリウムだが、次いで必要な元素にカルシウムがある。土壌中のカルシウムの量には地域差があり、それは母岩中のカルシウム量が異なるためと考えられている。我々は、日本では数万年前の噴火によって土壌に蓄積した火山灰が、母岩に匹敵するほど重要なカルシウム供給源なのではないか？と考え、最もカルシウム含有量が多い岩石である石灰岩の地域で、森林の植物のカルシウム供給源を調査する。
