Outline of Research at the Start

「やんばる」地域として知られる沖縄島北部では、貴重な野生生物保全に向けた特定外来種フイリマングースの根絶事業が展開されていて、その成功に伴い現在その実施地域は南下してきている。本研究では、根絶事業によって生じている様々なマングース密度下で、マングースと繁殖資源をめぐる競争関係にあるネパールモンシデムシを捕獲し、マングースとの競争から解放されたモンシデムシの分布拡大と個体数増加を解明する。その結果から、世界初となる門（Phylum）間の競争解放（Competitive release：競争排除が解けた状態）の存在を明らかにする。
