Outline of Research at the Start

Atrophy of the Eustachian tube(ET) surrounding tissues is implicated in the development of Patulous ET(PET). A high incidence of PET was reported in users of the IGF-1 receptor inhibitor (teprotumumab), a treatment for dysthyroid orbitopathy. This suggests the presence of IGF-1 receptors in this area. We will use imaging and animal studies to clarify the morphological and functional characteristics of Eustachian tube opacities and the role of IGF-1 in the maintenance of the ET surrounding tissues. In addition, we will examine the pathogenesis and treatment of PET.
