Outline of Research at the Start

角膜上皮幹細胞疲弊症に対する角膜上皮の基質の代用としてのデスメ膜移植、あるいは、難治性黄斑円孔に対する網膜欠損部充填剤としてのデスメ膜移植の確立に挑む。申請者らはこれまでに、水疱性角膜症の根治的治療を目的とした角膜内皮移植や人工角膜内皮移植をアジアで初めて成功させるなど、新たな技術開発や合併症の克服を目指した基礎的・臨床的研究を数多く推進してきた。その実績を基に難治性眼疾患の新規治療であるデスメ膜移植が開発されれば、現在の眼科医療・角膜移植医療に革命をもたらすインパクトの大きな医療となる。また、ドナー組織の有効活用の観点でも意義は大きい。
