Outline of Research at the Start	動脈硬化を起こした心臓冠動脈、心臓内膜、脳血管壁から歯周病の原因菌が検出され、心筋梗塞、脳梗塞の原因の一部に歯周病細菌がなっていることが報告されるようになった。また、アルツハイマー型認知症、動物実験レベルでは歯周病菌が癌の転移にも関与することが報告されている。さらに、高齢者の筋力低下にも歯周病菌の関与が知られている。この研究は口腔内細菌がどのような経路（消化管、血管、リンパ管）で動脈内に入り込むのかをMRI用の造影剤で標識した歯周病菌をラットに経口や実験的に惹起した辺縁性歯周炎部から長期間投与したときとの脳および消化器、全身への歯周病菌蓄積をMRIで追跡する研究である。
