本研究は「霊地」「霊場」の歴史的特殊性を意識し、日本史の文脈の中で、神仏が常時存在する場が成立してきたことの意味の解明を、経済史の視点も交えながら目指すものである。この研究を行うことによって、これまであいまいな定義の中で行われてきた聖地研究において、日本社会における聖地の成り立ちと特色が理解され、世界的に広く展開する聖地や巡礼と比較するための指標ができると位置づけている。
