本研究ではウィリアム・アレクサンダーの作品を(１)戯曲(２)詩(３)散文に分け、君主表象を切り口にしながら初期ステュアート朝の君主や皇太子たちの表現方法に注目する。その際に、他の同時代のイングランド出身の宮廷人の作品における君主表象にも注目することで同異点を明らかにし、アレクサンダーがどのように意匠を凝らしながら、周縁化されたスコットランドのナショナルアイデンティティの再生を試みたのかを追究する。
