Outline of Research at the Start

What is the relationship between security alliances and defense innovation? Why and how does Japan innovate in defense technologies? This research project conducts the first concerted study of alliances and innovation, and does so with a focus on the Japanese experience. Towards this end, the study will develop an “Allied Innovation Theory” whereby partner countries both determine technological trajectories and provide the means by which they are realized.
