Outline of Research at the Start

温暖化が進行した将来の気候がどのようになりうるかを知ることは人類にとって必須の課題である。こうした要請に応えるには，過去に実際にあった温暖期に注目し，そのときの環境変動の履歴を調べることが非常に有益であるが，気象観測による環境変動データは過去100年程度しか蓄積されていない。そこで本研究では，地質学的過去に存在した温暖期を対象として古環境学的な研究を展開する。具体的には，重要な中期鮮新世温暖期（約330-300万年前）の南極域における環境変動史を復元し，「中期鮮新世の温暖期に南極氷床・海氷・南極周極流システムがどのようにふるまったのか？」を解明することを目的とする。
