Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The various European avant-garde movements of the early 20th century exhibited two contrasting aspects: while they differed from one another in each’s having distinctive features that reflected the differing cultures of specific regions, they also appear as parallel, transnational, and transcultural phenomena that happened to develop during the same period and in similar directions. Our research has focused on trying to understand how these avant-garde movements reflect, in their respective ways, paradigm changes in perception arising from the development of technologies in various media. Through symposiums, workshops, and individual research efforts, we have examined how the avant-garde movements of different regions showed, in their respective ways, such common features as fragmentation, abstraction, and the combining of the technological and the corporeal―and how these features related to one another.
