Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in domestic animals in Bangladesh was revealed. In addition, it was also revealed that T. gondii mainly disseminate by horizontal infection among ruminant animals, rather than vertical transmission. The seasonal pattern, geographical pattern of case of infectious diseases among domestic animals were also described.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

人獣共通感染症をはじめとする多くの病原体について、農村における循環経路が把握できたことは大きな意義がある。これらの知見を元に、家畜感染症の予防対策や家畜から人への人獣共通感染症の予防対策を立案することができる。この意味で本研究が地域の公衆衛生に資する部分は非常に大きい。またトキソプラズマの垂直感染が反芻家畜において必ずしも高くないことを示した知見は、本原虫の垂直メカニズムや胎児毒性のメカニズムを明らかにするうえで重要な知識基盤となる。
