We examined the effects of lifestyle, family smoking, parental understanding of secondhand smoke risk, using urinary cotinine.
A survey on secondhand smoke was performed. Parents who agreed to participate answered a questionnaire and collected their child’s urine. The cotinine level from the urine was compared between children with and without family members who smoked. Urinary cotinine was assessed according to parental cognition regarding secondhand smoke as a health risk and their ban of smoking at home. About 50% of participants reported a family smoking. Children’s urinary cotinine was significantly higher among those with family members who smoked than from a non-smoking family. We assessed associations between parental knowledge of smoking risk and children’s urinary cotinine level according to family smoking status. Children’s urinary cotinine was reduced by parental knowledge of the health effects from secondhand smoke, even with a family member who smoked.
