Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research has shown that tourism development impacts islands not one-directionally. Rather, islands social and environmental conditions affect the way tourism develops and innovates in many ways, thus creating different development paths on each island. Furthermore, it became apparent that relations between actors from outside the islands, like administration, tourism industry or immigrants from other areas, and local stakeholders play a key role when aiming for sustainable tourism development. Therefore, indicators for the evaluation of sustainability need to be adjusted for each island and the connection between “inside” and “outside also needs to be considered.
