Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We collected Noukan Kougei related samples and analyzed them focusing on the Nanshitsu Bunka aspect of their creation. Noukan Kougei are simple craft works, created using limited tools and natural materials during the agricultural off - season. Nanshitsu Bunka refers to a cultural system where a natural material, such as wood, is transformed into a variety of objects, such as a house or cloth fiber, through simple tools without standardization. Through the comparison of the bark craft works around the Tohoku region (Northeast Japan) and the grass-wood craft works in the Yaeyama islands (Southwest Japan) we found that they both had common grounds. Even though the two locations are far away, material collection and creation process techniques proved similar. By using this insight, various artworks were created and exhibited. In addition, the knowledge was shared to workshop participants; indeed, Noukan Kougei proved that it has been continuously working in the modern society.
