Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to analyze the actual living conditions of Bangladeshi women migrants in New York City in the United States. This research is based on previous studies and the author's interviews. International labour migration accompanying globalization has expanded to involve Bangladeshi women who generally lived in rural areas of the country. The purpose of their international labour migration was not only to get a better education, but also to expand employment opportunities for their children and siblings. Interviewees for this research originally came from the quasi-upper-middle class in Bangladesh. However, these Bangladeshi woman migrants have been incorporated into the working-class in New York City and it means a decline in their standards of living. Their forms of employment are part-time jobs or irregular employment as unskilled workers with low wages. They are also plagued by the burden of heavy living expenses such as soaring apartment rents.
