Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We have succeeded in discovering some important facts about the literary heritage in secondary education in France. During the period from the reform of 1938, which marked an important step in the democratization of secondary education, to 1977, when the "College unique" was set up, the section entitled "Selected pieces in prose and in verse from the 17th to the present day" occupies a great number of pages in the textbooks. This fact calls for a reconsideration of the established view that the teaching of French in secondary schools favors the formation of literary culture. On the other hand, textbooks conforming to the 2009 curriculum place much more emphasis on literary education than the said period. This fact reflects the growing social demand that schools should contribute to building social peace by forming a common culture among future citizens.
