Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Question: What are the risk factors for developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a large 6-year cohort of first responders deployed to the 2011 Japanese earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disaster? Findings: A strong association was found between PTSD and sociodemographic factors (i.e., disaster victim status, older age) and working conditions (i.e., deployment length, post-deployment overwork), but professional disaster experience (i.e., body recovery, radiation exposure risk) was significant but modest. Meaning: PTSD symptoms among first responders in mass disasters could be mitigated by respecting personnel with disaster victim status or old age as well as monitoring deployment length and post-deployment overwork.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
