Outline of Final Research Achievements

Collagen sheets were formed out of the jellyfish collagen and the swine collagen dried with UVC.
Cultured human meningeal cells grew on the jellyfish collagen sheet less than on the swine collagen sheet.
Neither the jellyfish collagen sheet nor the swine collagen sheet adhered to the rat’s recipient dura two weeks after implanted over the rat’s dural defect.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

2014年にこの研究を始めたきっかけは、①脳外科手術では閉頭時に代用硬膜を使う機会が多いこと、②欧米で汎用されているウシ由来コラーゲンによる人工硬膜は、日本では異常型プリオン感染(ウシ海綿状脳症：狂牛病)を危惧して使用されなかったこと、③当時エチゼンクラゲやミズクラゲの大量発生が社会問題となっていたこと、などである。クラゲからコラーゲンを抽出する技術を生かし、クラゲ由来コラーゲンから人工硬膜が作成できれば、プリオン感染のない安全な代用硬膜として期待され、かつ有害で利用価値のないクラゲを有効利用できると考えた。
今回の研究では、クラゲ由来コラーゲンは代用硬膜には適していないという結果になった。
