| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The aim of this research is to describe how doctors deal with ‘uncertainty’ regarding treatments. Ushiyama, Shingae, Teruyama and Yoshida conducted interviews with doctors who treat atopic dermatitis, HIV/AIDS, developmental disabilities and borderline personality disorder respectively and compared the differences of the quality of ‘uncertainty’ depending upon the disease.
It was found that doctors dealt with different type of ‘uncertainty,’ depending upon the type of disease and how well established the treatments are. However, in terms of each disease, doctors stated that aspects of patients’ social life, such as their mental state and their relationship with family, friends or lovers, as an ‘uncertainty.’ Even though doctors ensure that they themselves follow the treatments based on guidelines and evidence-based medicine, such uncertainty cannot be solved and has to be dealt with doctors’ skills and knowledge they have learnt tacitly in their clinical experiences.
