| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
I have clarified William Morris's distinctive feature as a medievalist among other Victorians, based on the descriptions about medieval-like world and values appeared in his romances. Morris's various activities range from design to social activities; accordingly, up to the present date, Morris himself has been evaluated separately in each area. However, it can be found that his certain integrated thought lies in his literary works during his whole life, and through reconsidering and comparing them to other Victorians' thought and practice, I have brought out that Morris's socialism and paganism was supported by his pursuit of true belief.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
ヴィクトリア時代の文化的影響力は、その大きさゆえに画一的にとらえられがちである。しかし、ヴィクトリア時代人たちの活動の大きな潮流のみならず、個々人の活動についてあらためてとらえ直すことで、当時の「中世主義」のような一種の復古趣味が、社会的・文化的に果たした役割を精緻に明らかにすることができた。21世紀においても、また英国のみならず少なくとも日本においても、想像上の「中世」という理想像を語ることは継続的に行われており、本課題は、ヴィクトリア時代研究としての学術的意義を有すると同時に、今日の社会における現在進行中の文化現象の解明にたいしても寄与するものとなった。
