Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research I have analysed the discourse, policy and practice underpinning the structural discrimination against Roma throughout the different political (monarchist, fascist, communist and neoliberal) regimes in Romania. Focusing on the common aspects, I have argued that the modern progressive discourse, the power dynamics (top-down politics, governmental visibility and control), the scientific tools of inscription (simplification) and management have all combined to create and sustain institutionalised discriminatory practices against the Roma. Defying every regime transformation, the progressive modernist discourse has also allowed for a realignment of political and economic interests that have recycled and reinforced old practices, deepening and naturalising the discrimination faced by the Roma.
