Outline of Final Research Achievements

The survival rate for children with osteosarcoma has improved due to advances in treatment, including intravenous high-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX). Although HD-MTX has been associated with neurotoxic effects among survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and osteosarcoma survivors received HD-MTX at cumulative dosages 4- to 5-fold greater than the children with ALL, the impact of osteosarcoma treatment on neurocognitive functioning has not been well-studied in Japan.
We evaluated the neurocognitive status of 12 children using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children at baseline and annually during a 2-year follow-up period. Of the 12 children, 3 underwent the first testing one month after diagnosis and the remaining children after completion of therapy. Results from cognitive measures were converted to standardized scores using age-adjusted normative data.
