Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Brown fat tissue in adult humans is composed mainly of beige-like adipocytes. The molecular circuits involved in beige adipocyte biogenesis and thermogenesis have not been fully elucidated. Here, we demonstrate that Zip13-KO preferentially promotes beige adipocyte biogenesis and energy expenditure, and ameliorates diet-induced obesity. Furthermore, ZIP13-mediated zinc transport is a prerequisite for inhibiting beige adipocyte differentiation. Our data reveal an unexpected association between zinc homeostasis and beige adipocyte biogenesis, which may contribute significantly to new therapies for obesity.
