Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Corneal epithelium and stroma was evaluated for 4 patients who underwent keratoplasty following cultivated oral mucosal epithelial cell sheet transplantation. Stem cells were maintained in the basal layer more than one year after transplantation. In one case, keratin 12 specific for corneal epithelium was positive. It was suggested that cultivated oral mucosal cells obtained corneal phenotype in consequence of surrounding environment. Also, MUC16 specific for ocular surface was positive in three cases.
