This study aims to discuss the various situations of child spectators, who began to experience a unique status of acceptance and discourse in the 1950-60s Japanese film industry. My analysis focuses on the discourse of audience surveys conducted in the1950-60s.
The situation of child spectators in the 1950-60s must be understood in the context of two “non-theatrical” phenomena: 1) the Educational Film Curriculum Movement (Eiga Kyoshitsu-undo) and film screenings held during school assemblies (Gakko-eiga-kai), and 2) the relationship between films and new broadcast programs, including domestic radio drama and TV animation.
The educational film program concentrated on education for children beginning in the 1920s. By the 1950s, children frequently took in films in relation to radio programs. At the end of this study, I focus how Japanese cinema and Japanese TV animation within juvenile culture influenced each other during 1960s.
