Research Abstract

This project deals with the supply-side of the Japanese economy. Firstly, the characteristics of the Japanese tax systems are analyzed in order to clarify their impact on various aspects of the Japanese economy such as external imbalances, efficiency, equity, cost of capital, etc. (by HOMMA, Masaaki, NAKATANI, Iwao, ATODA, Naozumi, SAITO, Shin) Secondly, the determinants of the current account imbalance are investigated. UEDA, Kazuo makes it clear that the IS imbalance is the major cause of the imbalance in the Japanese current account at least in the long run. NAKATANI, Iwao argues that differences in tax system among nations are one of the essential factors creating external imbalances.
Other studies include analyses of "the welfare cost of permanent inflation" (IHORI, Toshihiro), "the liberalization of the Japanese financial system" (ROYAMA, Shoichi), "a comparison of skill formation systems in food processing industry between Thailand and Japan" (INOKI, Takenori), and "a dynamic incidence in a two-sector growing economy" (HOMMA, Masaaki).
These results of the project are compiled into a three-volume report in Japanese (Nippon Keizai no Sapurai Saido ni Kansuru Jisshoteki Kenkyu, Kenkyu Seika Hokokusho, March, 1986) to which the interested reader is referred.
