Research Abstract |
Previous reports showed that human enamel powders treated with Indium fluoride (InF3), Hafnium fluoride (HfF4) and Lanthanum nitrate (La(N03)3) solutions had a high acid-resistance property. Effects on human enamel surfaces of treatments with these solutions were investigated in the current year and were compared with Sodium fluoride (NaF) and Stannous fluoride (SnF2) solutions as a control. Following results were obtained; 1) Surface observation of enamel by EPMA ; The La(N03)3 treatment produced clusters consisting of needle-like crystals in diameter of ca. 3um on the enamel surface. The surface treated with The HfF4 solution was covred with creviced thick products as if they were cracked by drying. The amount of surface products by the InF3 treatment was smaller than those by other treatments. 2) Behavior of elements in surface portion observed by EPMA ; Ca, F and cation elements in cross-section parallel to labiolingual plane were investigated by EPMA. The HfF4 treatment markedly changed element distribution. That is, the amount of Ca decreased as far as max. 10um from surface and Hf penetrated max. 14um in depth. The InF3 and NaF treatments did not markedly damage the enamel surface in comparison with other treatments. 3) Identification of surface products by X-ray diffraction analysis ; X-ray diffraction analysis suggested that the HfF4 treatment produced Na2HfF6 and mixture of CaFP03.2H20 and CaHP04.2H20 on the surface, and that the La(N03)3 treatment produced mainly Ca8La2(P04)602 and small amounts of mixtures of Na3(Ce,La,Nd)(P04), LaHP207 and Ca3(P04)2.xH20. The surface products by the InF3 treatment should be Indium-Fluoride-Phosphate compounds.
