Research Abstract

In order to stabilize the n = 2 rotational instability which usually occurs in FRC plasmas, the application of multipole field was found to be useful. The theoretical study is mainly concentrated on the establishment of the stability criterion which gives the threshold field strength of the multipole field necessary to stabilize the FRC plasmas. On the other hand, the experiments to stabilize the FRC plasmas are done by using PIACE and OCT machines for wide range of plasma parameters and the results are compared with the theoretical prediction. The experimental threshold field strength is about one third of the theoretical one.
