Research Abstract |
Oxide formation reactions in a molten salt system is very important from many engineering aspects, such as new oxide material production, nuclear fuel reprocessing and corrosion protection. The aim of this project is to synthesize several kinds of oxide by the use of molten salt as a reaction media and to characterize them taking into account the above engineering aspects. The major results are : (1) Both electroanalytical method and stabilized zirconia - air electrode indicator electrode method have been confirmed to be effective to measure oxide-ion concentration. (2) Potential - <pO^(2-)> diagram of Ni in a LiF-KF- <O^(2-)> system has been established. (3) ZnO, <Al_2> <O_3> , Th <O_2> and U <O_2> have been synthesized and characterised, and their solubility products have been veasured by using the zirconia indicator. (4) In addition, as a side effect of this project, new method of electrodepositing refractory metals and their carbides has been established.
