Research Abstract

1. Various properties of fluorinated polymer Taking into consideration the chemical stability and water- or oilrepellence of fluorinated compounds, various kinds of acrylic fluorinated monomers were prepared. The monomers were polymerized and fundamental properties of the polymers as prosthesis materials were determined. It was found that specific gravity was increased by the fluorination of polymer, and that refractive index, surface hardness and water sorption were decreased. Further, fluorinated polymer demonstrated smaller amount of protein adsorption on its surface.
2. Preparation of soft polyfluoroethylene
Soft fluorinated polymer was prepared by terpolymerization of vinylidene fluoride, trifluorochloroethylene and tetrafluoroethylene. Since the polymer was soluble and possessed excellent mechanical properties, polymer sheet or polymer solution was used to prepare prosthesis materials. Methacrylic unit was incorporated into low molecular weight polyfluoroethylene and it was found that the polyfluoroethylene monomer could easily be polymerized by redox or visible light initiators.
3. Application of soft polyfluoroethylene
Various biological evaluation of the synthesized soft polyfluoroethylene were carried out. They were hemolysis test or cell culture test using silicone rubber as a control, and subcutaneous implantation test for rats. It was ascertained that the polyfluoroethylene did not cause any severe tissue reaction and that the polymer was stable in a body for a long time. The soft polyfluoroethylene was clinically applied to soft denture liner, coating material for tissue conditioner and various prostheses. Based on the results, it was concluded that the soft polyfluoroethylene was a promising material as maxillofacial prosthesis material.
