Research Abstract

In 1983, when this project was started, the number of DNA sequences determined by the emerging new techniques of gene cloning and recombinant DNA etc. was going to show a remarkable increase. The situtation at that time was to require the establishment of worldwide DNA data banks in USA, Europe and also in Japan.
The aims of this project have been
1) search of technical problems concerning collection of literatures which contain DNA base sequences, procedures to input sequence data, format of filing the data, etc.,
2) utilization of the data bank at computing centers of major universities, and
3) development of softwares to analyze base sequences. The achievements are
1) the collection of scientific papers which any base sequences are described has been done almost completely; the total number is about 600, 1200, and 1300 in 1983, 1984, and 1985, respectively, indicating that the increase in base sequence data becomes steady. Nevertheless, the number of bases of total sequences is still increasing because the length of a sequence published in a paper becomes longer than before. Following the Genbank format, the filing format for DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ) was determined; the additional item to the GenBank format is MEMBER, which has 8 characters for making individual files possible.
2) The softwares to search and analyze DDBJ data were developed at computing centers of Hokkaido, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, and Kyushu University.
3) Computer programs for editing, handling, and analyzing sequences have been developed, and now a program package of IDEAS is available for the purpose of sequence analysis.
The basis of DNA Data Bank of Japan has been provided by this project.
