Research Abstract |
This investigation has been undertaken since 1984 ( Showa 59 nen ) according to a three years' programme. The aim is to make a detailed and thorough investigative study of all the books and documents ranging from Heian to Edo Period possessed by Sanzenin in Ohara, Sakyo District, Kyoto City. It also aimed at the clarification of the individual value of each single material, and by doing all these, it was desired to clarify the concrete picture of the cultural area formed by Sanzein-Hieizan, ultimately the religious body of Tendai sect. At the completion of the investigation of all the above 3000 books and documents, the following points have been clarified: (1)That there are many records of Senboko ( a religious ceremony exercised by the Royal family ) from Kamakura to Edo Period, which give us a concrete picture of the relationship between Sanzenin and the Royal Family. (2)That there are many Shomyo (a kind of religious music) materials showing, together with the materials of (1), the conditions of Buddhistic music centering around Ohara. (3)That there are abundant materials concerning the religious activities of Tendai sect and Hieizan, especialy those that explain Hieshinko ( Shintoistic part in Tendai religion ). (4)That there are many literary materials of Waka and Renga related with Royal and Noble Families because Sanzenin has been a Monzekijiin ( Temple related with the Royal Family) giving invaluable evidences to the study of literature of Kamakura to Edo Period. In addition to the above findings, there are many materials which have not been introduced, therefore, the possibility of the further development of this investigation including the reports of these unintroduced materials should be considered very great.
