Research Abstract |
F. Suzuki demonstrated that fetal bovine cartilage contains both a somatomedin-like factor on cultured rabbit chondrocytes and an endothelial cell growth inhibitor. He suggested that the cellular response to somatomedin-like factor was highly dependent on the density of chondrocytes. I. Yamane (T. Satoh) purified fibroblast-derived endothelial cell growth factor (f-ECGF) from serum-free medium of human embryo fibroblasts. f-ECGF is an acidic-glycoprotein with an isoelectric point in the pH range 4.5-6, and Mr approx. 30 kD. K. Shizume found that human anterior pituitary tissues contain heat- and acid-stable TGF-like mitogen(s) with Mr 15 kD. This factor did not compete with EGF for receptor binding and did not require EGF for colony forming activity. F. Takaku found that a renal cell carcinoma and a hepatocellular carcinoma produce a marked erythropoiesis in each patient. The erythropoietin-like activities were purified from the conditioned media from both tumor cells. Y. Takeda found that a two-chain polypeptide, which corresponds to amino acid residues 115-143 and 144-184 (185) of bovine serum albumin, potentiated the effects of insulin on glucose metabolism in isolated rat adipocytes. A. Ichihara found that rat platelets contain not only a growth factor (Hepatocyte growth factor; HGF), but also at least two types of growth inhibitor (Platele-derived growth inhibitor-alpha; PDGI-alpha, and PDGI-beta) that affect adult rat hepatocytes. K. Nishikawa purified tumor growth stimulating activity (TGSA) from the rat Rhodamine fibrosarcoma tissue. He suggested that TGSA, a new class of potent growth factor produced by tumor cells, supports their own growth. T. Kishimoto purified human B-cell differentiation factor (BCDF) to homogeneity from cultured supernatants of TCL-Nal cells. Purified BCDF induced Ig secretion in Epstein-Barr virus-transformed cell lines.
