Research Abstract |
THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION WAS PLANNED TO OBTAIN FUNDAMENTAL INFORMATION ON CHANGES OF STRUCTURE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS MATERIALS INCLUDING METALS, ALLOYS, AND CERAMICS IRRADIATED BY NEUTRONS, ELECTRONS AND IONS UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS. RESULTS OBTAINED ARE AS FOLLOWS; 1 IRRADIATING NICKEL BY FUSION AND AND FISSION NEUTRONS, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE DEFECT DENSITY DEPENDENCE OF STRENGTH WAS SMALLER BUT THAT OF VOID SWELLING WAS LARGER IN FUSION-NEUTRON IRRADIATED SPECIMEN THAN IN FISSION-NEUTRON IRRADIATED ONE. 2 MOLYBDENUM SINGLE CRYSTALS, IRRADIATED BY FAST NEUTRON TO 1 DPA AND TESTED BY A THREE-POINT BENDING TEST, SHOWED A DUCTILE-BRITTLE TRANSITION TEMPERATURE BELOW ROOM TEMPERATURE. THIS MEANS THAT THE GRANIN BOUNDARY CONTROLL MUST BE IMPORTANT IN THIS METAL. 3 EFFECTS OF ALLOYING ELEMENTS ON IRRADIATED VANADIUM WERE STUDIED. CHROMIUM PROMOTED, WHILE MOLYBDENUM, TITANIUM AND CARBON SUPPRESSED THE VOID SWEELING. IRON AND NIOBIUM INDUCED IRRADIATION HARDENING BY INCREASE OF DIALOCATION DENSITY, WHILE TITANIUM INDUCED IRRADIATION SOFTENING. 4 EFFECTS OF ALLOYING ELEMENTS, SUCH AS LITHIUM, MAGNESIUM, SILICON AND MANGANESE, ON THE IRRADIATION DAMAGE IN HIGH PURITY ALUMINUM WERE STUDIED. A LOW ACTIVATION ALUMINUM-MAGNESIUM-LITHIUM ALLOY WAS TENSILE TESTED AFTER IRRADIATION AT 673 K, AND IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT HIGH TEMPERATURE IRRADIATION DID NOT DETERIORATE THE MECHANICAL PROPERTY OF THE ALLOY. 5 INDESTIGATIONS ON PRECIPITATES IN STEELS, VOID NUCLEATION, SUPPRESSION EFFECT OF TITANIUM ON VOID FORMATION, FATIGUE PHENOMENON, OR CREEP BEHAVIOR IN SEVERAL STAINLESS STEELS WERE PERFORMED. 6 INCREASE IN STRENGTH AND YOUNGS MODULUS WERE MEASURED IN NEUTRON-IRRADIATED SILICON CARBIDE FIBER. RECOVERY OF DIMENSION OF IRRADIATED BULK SILICON CARBIDE BY ISOCHRONAL ANNEALING WAS OBSERVED AT AROUND 800 K. 7 DEFECT STRUCTURE IN VARIOUS CERAMICS WAS OBSERVED AND CLASIFIED FROM VIEW POINT OF THE RELATION BETWEEN CRYSTAL STRUCTURE AND STRUCTURAL VACANCY.
