Research Abstract |
Our project have now completed the research project of "religion and politics" under the preceding title for two years from the comprehensive aspects of study. In the sphere of the pre-modern history of Japan, ISHIDA, head investigator, Tsuruoka, Nuki, Numata, co-investigators, researched the problems relating to religious authority from ancient times to the end of Edo era. ISHIDA studied the problem of biginnings of Nara-buddhism, the relations between buddhism and Tenno-authority, especially, the role of "Sanrin-shugyo ". Tsuruoka studied "Hachiman-belief" and the establishment of "Buke-government" and Nuki. Tennoism at the medeival age, popular belief of "Tenno", and Numata, nationalism at the end of Edo era, especially, "Kokugaku-ideology". We, all the members of this project, researched the new historical sources of the problems of religion and politics in the pre-modern society of Japan different from the former method of study, and we have now published the report of our individual case studies made from the new method of social studies. And it is for the first time that our project have researched the problems of religion and politics from the comparative case-method of study comparing to China, Europe, India and Latin America. Konno studied the world of christianity at the age of medieval Europe, and Kamo, the pre-modern world of Latin America, and Ona, the world of medieval India. And Utsugi and Okuzaki studied the world of China at the age of ancient and medieval China, especially popular belief of buddhism and taoism, and finally Kega studied the christian missions to Japan at the end of Edo era.
