Research Abstract |
In high-energy hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions it is important and interesting to measure K mesons in the momentum range of about a few GeV/c. Currently, however, since the experimental technique to detect and identify these mesons in this momentum range has not been well established, no detailed studies of K-meson production in this momentun range have been carried out in the past experiment. In this project we developed various new techniques with which to select and identify K mesons with momenta from 1 to 20 GeV/c out of huge pion and proton backgrounds. For example, we succeeded in constructing a timeof-flight counter system of scintillators with time resolution of <sigma> = 50 ps, which is a world record in <sigma> . We made high-pressure gas Cerenkov counters to allow particle identification up to 20 GeV/c. We invented a new and simple detector system out of Pb blocks and scintillators to selectively detect <K゛+> with momenta up to 1 GeV/c. In addition, we have started to make a new counter, using a novel technique called ring imaging of Cerenkov lights. Using these counters we plan to detect K mesons in the experiment that we plan to perform at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data taking of this experiment will start soon during the year of 1986.
