Research Abstract

The purpose of this project is to make clear the kinetics of interface phenomena included in welding process. Experimental and analytical approaches were carried out for diffusion welding and fusion welding. Results obtained in this project are summarized as follows.
(1) Kinetics of diffusion bonding process is discussed for similar materials (nickel to nickel, alumina to alumina). Bonding process can be evaluated by calculating the shrinkage of voids at bonding interface. Bonding strengths of metals depend on area bonded, but those of ceramics on the shape and size of void at the interface.
(2) The drop detachment condition in MIG welding can be derived from the pendant drop model in low current level, but in high current level including pulsed current method the effect of pinch instability becomes dominant.
(3) Sufficient joint strength of fusion-welding ceramics using <CO_2> laser can be obtained by forming glass phase at grain boundary such as CaO-MgOSi <O_2> - <Al_2> <O_3> in joining zirconia, which has plasticity to release the shrinkage stress during welding.
