Research Abstract |
This study deals with various biological effects of oxygenated sterols on blood components such as erythrocytes and platelets in relation with diseases like atherosclerosis and heart disease, and resulted in the following findings. (1) Sitosterol and fucosterol were found to produce plasminogen activator in cultured endothelial cells from bovine carotod artery. (2) Some of the oxygenated sterols found to cause rapid modulation of platelet aggregation in plasma. (22R)-22-Hydroxycholesterol found to specifically undertakes lysis of platelets and erythrocytes through its incorporation into membrane. (3) Cholesterol analogues with a carbene-generating substituent on the side chain were synthesized and their photochemical reactions were investigated in a model system. (4) Oxygenated sterols of fungus-infected silkworm carcass, Bombyx cum Botryte were analyzed. (5) 15-Oxygenated sterols were found to be a potent inhibitor of enzymatic conversion of dihydrolanosterol into cholesterol. (6) Natural sterols and terpenoids with biological activities related in this project were investigated and their structures were determined. (7) Serum sterols from patients (hypertension, atherosclerosis) were analyzed for oxygenated sterols.
