Research Abstract

1) The response of rat bladder epithelium to bacteria inoculated into the bladder and the movement of these bacteria were observed with scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Most bacteria were floating in the bladder cavity, not stick to the bladder epithelium, until 4 hours after inoculation. This observation suggests that ,since floating bacteria may be easily removed by micturition, elimination of bacteria by micturition is of most important on defence mechanism within this period.
2) P blood type of patients with acute cystitis and P-fimbriae of E.coli isolated from the patients were examined. The results showed that over-all frequency of phenotype <P_1> and <P_2> were equal in the patients and control Japaneses. However, phenotype <P_1> was more frequently observed in the cystitis-prone patients than controls. P-fimbriae was proved in 2 of 14(14%) E.coli.
3) Urinary concentration of mannose, which is epithelial receptor to type 1-fimbriae, was measured in normal nealthy control and patients with acute cystitis. The results showed that there was no difference between the mean value of patients and controls. However, 33.3% of the patients with acute cystitis showed lower concentration than 7.5 g/ml, while only 4.1% of normal control were lower than 7.5 g/ml.
