Research Abstract |
This research studies aim at clarifying the structual features of the basic values of the Japanese. Four problems are focused:(1) the viewpoint of interpersonal relationship of people, (2) aesthetic and moral values, (3) values of health and religion, and (4) the conception of work. The field work was carried out in 1985. The subjects of the questionnaire were 3,883 persons of the 28 companies of various kinds in Osaka, Nagoya, Hiratuka, Tokyo, and Koriyama. After the simple and cross tabulation, some statistical analyses were made in 1986. In the area of (1) the values emphasized in interactive situation were the "contextualism" which had been said to have three attributes of (a) mutual dependence, (b) mutual reliance, and (c) regard for interpersonal relations not as means but as ends in themselves, as well as the "individualism" based on the three traits of (a) ego-centeredness, (b) self-reliance, and (c) regard for interpersonal relations as a means to an end. It was found in the anylysis by the third kind of quantitative theory and the factor analysis that both values were supported by the same group in a high correlational dynamism. As for the problems of (2) and (3), the main determinants of life were thought to be the fate and fortune, intimate relations, and their own effort and endeavor. The aesthetic sense of deed called "iki" was also found. The (d) part of studies dealed with the conception of work, the high degree of commitment to the company by the Japanese businessmen was confirmed as we anticipated.
