Research Abstract |
The International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior(IASPEI) and UNESCO passed the following resolution at an Asia and Oceania regional workshop on Historical Seismogram in 1982. "Noting that seismograms recorded at observatories around the world are basic for research on earthquakes and the structure of the Earth and that many of the early seismograms have been lost in war, through natural hazards and deterioration and, therefore, it is essential that seismograms of significant earthquakes be systematically collected and preserved by making photographic copies observatory sites, be made available through the World Data Centres. IASPEI urges that seismological observatories around the world cooperate with a copying programme by providing access to historical seismograms to be photographed on site and by preparing supporting observatory data to accompany the copies." "Historical" denotes the time prior to the WWNSS era, i.e. prior to 1963. In response to the above resolution, we arranged our archived seismograms in chronological order and listed all missing records. By the end of of 1986, 33,787 seismograms were copied on 53 rolls of 35mm microfilm. The original microfilms are preserved at our observatory and a copied set of them have been sent to the World Data Center A for solid Earth Geophysics, Boulder,Co. U.S.A., and two sets of them will be exchanged for those of the International Latitude Observatory of Mizusawa and the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo. The databook was also published to permit convenient use of this microfilm. The information of filming format, station data, instrument data, inventory sheets and phase data of the period of 1934- 1957 are described in this book.
