Research Abstract |
The plasma sources using rare gases such as argon and helium have been used as the excitation sources in spectrochemical analysis, and they have allowed high- sensitive determination of many elements by means of plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Recently there are large demands to obtain the information about chemical species and characterization of trace elements at the ultratrace level. Thus, the present research, supported for 1984-1986, has aimed to develop the new methods for characterization of trace elements, where inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and microwave-induced atomic emission spectrometry (MIP-AES) have been used as the element-selective detectors in liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC), respectively. In the study on the LC/ICP-AES method, the following experiments have been carried out; (1) Determination of rare earth elements in rocks, rare earth ores, soils, coals, etc., (2) Development of the preconcentration, sep

aration, and determination methods for trace metals in seawater and their application to the measurements of heavy metal distributions in coastal seawater, (3) Development of analysis of small volume solution samples and solid samples by graphite cup direct insertion /ICP-AES, (4) Characterization of chlorophil compounds with magnesium detection by ICP-AES utilizing liquid chromatography. Theses researches and the experimental results have been difficult to be performed, and they are highly evaluated through the papers in academic meetings and journals. In the study on the GC/MIP-AES method, the following experiments have been carried out; (1) Determination of selenium and arsenic in biological samples, (2) Development of new analytical methods for arsenic and tin by chemical derivative gas chromatography, (3) study on the analytical method for alkyl mercury. In these studies, chemical speciation of trace elements have become possible, and they have been receiving great attention as the new methods for characterization of trace elements in biological, clinical, environmental, geochemical and other fields.
