Research Abstract |
The aging of the leaf tissue relates closely with the rice blast resistance. Aged leaves are highly resistant to blast disease. Therefore, the possibility that the rapidity of aging of leaves after the development could be different among the horizontally resistant cultivars and result in the difference of the degree of horizontal resistance. Although the degree of aging was similar at upto 10 days after the leaf development, the degree was different just after full development of leaves. Horizontally weak cultivars remained in younger physiological situation for a while after the leaf development than that of strong cultivars. Various aging-markers such as hemicellulose, <alpha> -cellulose,Total N, RNA, Protein and chlorophyll contents were useful for the screening of the horizontally resistant cultivars. While, the degree of UV damages on the leaf after UV irradiation for 1 hr with germcidal lamp was severer in aged leaf. This marker is also usable for the test of the degree of aging among the resistant cultivars. Further experiments will be required to evaluate this new methods for the rapid-screening of the resistant cultivars without the blast inoculation. The association of the ability of anti-blast substance production of each cultivar with the degree of the horizontal resistance is under investigation.
