Research Abstract |
1. Direct projections from the central amygdaloid nucleus to the spinal cord were found in the Japanese monkey by the retrograde horseradish peroxidase method. 2. A retrograde and anterograde wheat germ agglutinated horseradish peroxidase study in the cat revealed that some neurons in the dorsal column nuclei and interpolar and caudal spinal trigeminal nuclei sent projection fibers to the dorsal and ventral cochlear nuclei. 3. Neurotensin-like immunoreactivity was visualized in projection neurons in the striatum of the cat. Some of these neurons with neurotensin-like immunoreactivity were further indicated to contain enkephalin or gamma amino butyric acid. 4. The thalamic taste are (ventromedial region in the parvicellular division of the posteromedial ventral nucleus of the thalamus) in the cat were found to send projection fibers not only to the taste area in the cerebral cortex (area 43) but also to the rostrodorsal part of the lateral amygdaloid nucleus, infralimbic cortex (area 25), and perirhinal cortical area (area 35). 5. Cytochrome oxidase histochemistry revealed patchy patterns of the enzyme activity in transverse sections through the caudal part of the ventral subnucleus of the main sensory trigeminal nucleus, interpolar spinal trigeminal nucleus, and layer IV of the caudal spinal trigeminal nucleus in the cat. By the transganglionic transport method of horseradish peroxidase, the patterns were indicated to replicate the spacial array of the facial vibrissae.
