Research Abstract |
As a constitutional predisposiotion of school refursals we investigated giving a special emphasis on their biorhythm. The checking items were as follows : all night sleep EEG, deep body temperature, serum cortisol (Cor), serum <beta> -endorphin ( <beta> -Ep), urine volume, urinary sodium excretion, urinary catecholamines (CA), skin potential level and heart rate. The test subjects were 63 cases of school refusals but checking items were somewhat different with one another and,in addition, partially, children who showed only unidentified clinical syndome were included. Further, the school refusals were classified according to DSM- <III> (Diagnostic and Statistical Mannualfor Mental Disorders, <III> rd Edition) and relationships between the classes and the test.results were investigated. (1)With respect to items of blood <beta> -Ep, urinary sodium excretion, skin potential level and heart rate, the number of subjects who did not show the intrinsic circadian rhythm (24 <+!-> 4 hours cycle) we

re significantly larger in the group of school refusals than the control group. (2)As to the all night sleep EEG, the decrease of sleep efficiency index and REM sleep or increase of waking after sleep onset or such that indicated the abnormality of sleep pattern were observed many in the school refusals, however, no discernoble tendency among the types of DSM- <III> was noted. (3)The results of deep body temperatures in abdominal and plantar regions indicated that in the school refusals and unidentified clinical syndome groups, decrease of the difference between abdominal and plantar temperatures as well as decrease of rhythmical change of plantar temperature usually observed in normal subjects were noted. (4)Correlations between variables derived from the excretion rhythm of urinary CAs and the levels of adaptive functioning (DSM- <III> , Axis 5) were investigated by means of multivariate analysis. The results showed significant correlations between some variables of CA excretion and the level of adaptative functioning. From the above results, it was elucidated that the abnormality of school refusals can be identified by various parameters related to biorhythm. Less
