Research Abstract

Factors promoting the development of the remnant stomach were investigated and the following results were obtained.
1. The assay system to measure ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity in the glandular stomach mucosa of rats was established.
2. It was elucidated that bile acids induced ODC activity in the glandular stomach of rats.
1) Na-taurocholate was instillated into the stomach of rats and ODC activity was induced in the glandular stomach mucosa. The activity was detected 4 to 6 hours after the instilation and the maximum one was obtained at the dose of 1.75 g/Kg body weight.
2) Na-taurodeoxycholate and Na-taurochenodeoxycholate similarly induced ODC activity.
3) The activity was highest in the antrum, followed by the body of the glandular stomach and the forestomach.
3. It was elucidated that the administration of bile acids after the carcinogen promoted the induction of tumors in the remnant stomach of rats.
1) Rats were devided into 4 groups. MNNG(83<micrn>g/ml) was administered for 15 weeks and gastrectomy was performed by the Roux en Y method which would prevent duodenal reflux at the 16th weeks in group I while the diets containing 0.25% Na-taurocholate were gilven following the administration of MNNG and gastrectomy in group 2. Bile acid-containing diets was given after gastrectomy without MNNG administration in group 3 and only MNNG was administered in group IV.
2) The incidence of tumors was 6/22 (27.3%) in group I, 9/22 (40.8%) in group 2 , 0/22 (0%) in group 3 and 2/24 (8.3%) at the site corresponded to the remnant stomach in group IV. The incidence of group 2 was significantly higher than that of group IV (p<0.05). Thus, the administration of the bile acid promoted the development of tumor in the remnant stomach.
These results suggested that bile acids are factors promoting the development of the remnant stomach.
