| Research Abstract |
A glimpse of French culture in the modern era, particularly the Renaissance culture of the sixteenth century, shows that Northern and Southern France influenced each other in almost equal terms. It must be emphasized that the South played as significant a role as the North in the formation of modern France. I have long been engaged in the study of the politics, society and culture of Southern France mainly through investigation into its language and literature and put out the fruit of my endeavours in various publications. My accumulated experience has brought me to the realization that research into the language and literature of the region in the Renaissance period requires an extensive reading in the contemporary writing instead of mere historical knowledge of them.
Therefore, I embarked upon editing a Renaissance Provencal-French dictionary for the specific purpose of better understanding of the research theme. The partner I chose for the project is Mr Chikao Kawabata, an assistant professor at Okayama University Computer Centre, who helped me to compile and classify the entire vocabulary of the Renaissance literature in Southern France through computer processing. The result of our cooperation has been made public in the form displayed on the reverse side of the page.
Employed for the procedure was a large scale computer "ACOS-System 1000" installed at Okayama University Computer Centre. We are now making a further attempt to develop various types of software which will endow the much smaller-scale personal computer "FM-11" with equal or hopefully additional functions.
Our efforts in the present project will be continued until we achieve our ultimate goal, namely, publication of a Renaissance Provencal-French dictionary, which does not at the moment exist even in France.
