Research Abstract

The present study was designed to obtain additional information concerning the tuberculous, mycorrhizic gametophytes and to clarify the diversity of the gametophyte features. The gametophytes and embryos were observed for Psilotum nudum, Lycopodium clavatum and Botrychium multifidum. Observations on the features of them were described morphologically, together with the historical reviews on the tuberculous gametophytes in Psilotaceae, Lycopodiaceae and Ophioglossaceae.
About two hundred gametophyte of Psilotum nudum were collected from a clay pot in which the sporophyte was growing. The gametophytes are cilindrical with obconic basal tip and almostly have unequal dichotomous branches. They have a strong resemblance to the slender small rhizomes having the same rhizoids and gemmae.
About 80 gametophytes of Lycopodium clavatum from nature, including various form from young prothallia to large mature ones, were collected and the external and internal morphology were investigated. Especially the anatomical feature of the embryos are particularly described in this report.
About two hundred gametophytes of Botrychium multifidum were observed. The mature one is tuberous, somewhat flattened dorsiventrally, having a median longitudinal dorsal ridge upon which antheridia are produced. The young embryo maintained a broadly oval outline. The suspensor is composed of several cells, and is slightly curved, embedded within the tissue of gametophyte.
