Research Abstract |
To study the relation between growth and wood quality of trees managed with various density control systems, the three typical districts (Kito district - sparse planting ;Kuma district - dense planting; Aki district - standard plantation) of Sugi plantation in Shikoku island were selected. The 12 sample trees in each district were investigated. The results obtained are as follows: (1) In middle aged stands, the difference of annual ring width between Kito and the other districts are significant at the 1% level. (2) Kito managed with low density is well growing. (3) On the properties of appearance of wood, the length of dead/live branch knot in Kito district is longer than it in other district, the sapwood begins to form at a disk diameter of 6 - 8cm, and there is a highly significant relationship between heartwood diameter and disk diameter in all stands. (4) A tree with large radius increments has longer tracheids in both juvenile and mature wood. (5) On the physical properties of wood, the most important factor influencing basic density is the percentage of late wood. There is negative correlation between ring width and basic density with wide variation between individual tree. On the strength properties of wood, the bending and compressive strength is directly proportional to the specific gravity. The average strength of wood from Kito is low because of its low specific gravity.
