Research Abstract

Hearing and vestibular functions in patients with unilateral deafness were investigated. The handicap in their daily and school life were also estimated.
Results were:
1.From the evaluation of the pure tone audiometry and the articulation test of the unimpaired ear was normal, and no exacerbation of hearing was observed during the period of this study. 2.Tympanometry was useful to diagnose the serous otitis in patients of 6-7 years old. 3.Forty three percent of the patients did not complain of difficulty of hearing, on the other hand 62% had some trouble in their school and 49% were inconvenienced in their daily life. 4.Nine percent of the patients were not recognized to have hearing impairment in the school. 5.The ability of sound localization were very poor in the patients compared with the normal subjects, and no tendency of the improvement of the ability was seen in the course of three ears. But only 5% of the patients noticed their poor ability of sound localization. 6.As the vestibular functions, nystagmus was observed in 23% of the patients under the electronystagmography, and 67% were revealed abnormalities on carolic test. Thirty eight percent of the patients had vertigo and 20% had dizziness. 7.In comparison with high ratio of the abnormalities in vestibular function tests there was little handicap in their life.
From the evaluationof hearing tests serous otitis should be taken care in the early school age patients. The preferable position of the seat in the classroom was at the end of their suffering ear side.
It was common in patients with unilateral deafness that at one time their hearing seemed to be normal and at the other time they seemed to be abnormal. From this fact sometimes they were misunderstood as malingering, so it was necessary to promote mutual understanding in both daily and school life.
